This course aims to build the performer?s instrument and expose them to a variety of ways of making and performing theater through a physical perspective. The course will provide students with tools to identify and develop compelling and dynamic performance qualities, dramatic intention, and physical metaphor, along with a vocabulary to articulate their observations and experience. In a demanding yet supportive atmosphere, this course fosters ensemble awareness as well as improvisational and play development skills. Technique, theory, structured improvisation, and collaborative/solo performance projects will give each student the opportunity to assimilate important principles into their working process. Techniques and concepts covered each week will be applied to solo/group improvisations. The course will investigate poetic, tragic, and playful performance. The actor's body knowledge, strength, and stamina will be addressed in every class. Physical concepts will be connected to vocal expression (abstract and work with text). Students will be asked to show and look at work in every class in order to build a common vocabulary for analyzing and critiquing their own work and the work of others. Through this rigorous course, students will broaden their expressive range and garner the skills that place the actor at the center of the creative process, whether they are creating original work or interpreting the work of others.
